For many of us, Spring Break has come and gone by now. Many teachers are embroiled in "testing season," those few weeks where the dreaded standardized tests become our focus. Outside of testing, this part of the year is a favorite because by now my students are "trained" and totally (well, 98% of the time) understand rules, procedures, and protocol - even in a year with a worldwide pandemic.

'Tis the season of new beginnings and renewal....but, as temperatures rise and as outdoor and evening activities become more prevalent, teachers may find their stamina waning a bit. Well, here is a giveaway to put some SpRiNg in YoUr StEp!!

I've joined with a few friends on Instagram over at @rockingeducation to give away THREE gift cards for Teacher Pay Teachers!! Please click the link and take a look at some super educator accounts with hundreds of engaging resources - no purchase necessary! The giveaway ends on 4/16, and winners will be announced on 4/18. I studied these trees from the first tinge of pink on the branches through to the full blush of white and pink blossoms and continued enjoying its beauty as the blossoms "snowed" down across the lawn. Those blossoms were a perfect antidote for all of the endless tech issues and checklists of eLearning.

The lovely dogwood pictured above is the perfect image to herald a seriously splendid sitewide spring sale! On April 6-7 TpT is offering an additional 5% off for stores on sale! I feel like it was just September and then I blinked and it's November! One positive is that gratitude is often a focus in November, and I'm sure we can find many things to be thankful for - even during a pandemic.

For me, I am extremely grateful for each day that my school district is in session face-to-face! I love seeing my students' smiling faces each morning. I love this chance to develop connections and sharing a big part of our days together.

I hope you will find something to be thankful for among our November resources! Really - it's been a LONG several months of being in survival mode during eLearning {and, honestly, in recovery mode during the past few weeks once the school year ended} - but here we are with another school year stretching out before us. Another year usually brings a buzz of excitement wondering about the new group of kids, implementing summer PD, and setting up my classroom. This year is no different - excitement is brewing - but along with that is all of the uncertainty that the current pandemic brings with it.

Are you starting the year on time? Are you going to be teaching virtually or face-to-face to start? I hope you start the year with your own sense of excitement, either way. Treasure building those connections with your new students. Find ways to make memories, whether from afar or within a 6-foot radius. Reach out to parents and share classroom happenings - and make sure to sing the praises of specific students with parents. Help your community know that learning is still happening and that your kids are loved!

Hey, also don't forget that it's sale time! Teachers Pay Teachers' BTS sale has always been a time for me to peruse my stored wish-list items and to grab some needed resources while on sale. And this year is no different. It's fun to find new resources to share with kids and to make learning fun - AND to free up my valuable time since I don't have to recreate the wheel. Save 20% on resources in my store, and use the code BTS20 to save an added 5%!

Here's to a good year - no matter what it looks like!

My last post included the mantra one. more. week. Don't get me wrong, I truly love this time of year, especially in the classroom. It's full of excitement, energy, activity, and wonder. It can be so magical!

It's crazy to think that we're just about finished with the 2019 holiday season at school. It's even crazier to realize January is right around the corner and will be here before you know it—well, hoping not, hoping you have a nice LONG break. But one way or another, January will come sneaking in and you'll want to be ready!

Do you have your favorite resources that you love using each year, or are you a "let's see what's out there" teacher who enjoys mixing it up a bit? I seem to do both—come back to a few favorites, but each year I add a new favorite, too.

I've joined with a few TpT teacher-author friends to share some Christmas and winter FREEBIES to help get you excited about.........

Either way, there's something here for everyone. Click on the caption to see the resource, and be sure to check out the other resources each author has for your kids and classroom needs. Authors also LOVE it when people leave feedback on anything, so please be sure to send some love their way after you download and use their resources. Maybe you'll find a new favorite among these talented teacher-authors' resources!
We spend hours planning curriculum to engage our students and share our own passion for reading, writing, math, and all that our state standards mandate as need-to-know basics for our own grade level or department.

If you are at all like me, you also vow to keep student and parent info organized and at your fingertips. In particular, I need help tracking student data, identifying important allergy information, managing expectations for students when there is a sub, and matching student names with parent names and emails. This last one is critical with so many of our students coming from blended families or having a different last name than the parent. And then there is the parent email that begins with something like "rockstardad," "fuzzywuzzy," "ophidiophobia," or "hooterchic04" (seriously, I do not need to know that you worked at Hooters when you were younger), or worse! When I need to send a quick email to a particular parent, sometimes it's hard to identify which student matches with which {inventive} email name.

With our BTS Basics Bundle, we've created a bundle of BTS resources to help you START and STAY organized this year....always my own personal vow, so I imagine others are in the same organizationally-challenged boat.

Included, you'll find more than TWENTY different forms and BTS resources:
Not necessary, but fun—grab a pack of Astro-bright paper and print the student info forms on one bright color, print parent info forms on another, and {my favorite tip} print data sheets on your own or each student's favorite color just to make data collection and reporting a bit more fun and enticing.
Pool time, taking time for coffee, slushes, or lemonade, taking a class, running kids to activities or playdates, visiting your local library with a bunch of books in your arms - ahhh, sweet summer - when our time is (mostly) our own!!

Summer also means more time to explore professional learning. These might be things we don't take the time to do during the year. Let's face it, often the school year doesn't afford us the luxury of reading professional books or exploring new blogs or podcasts. This is one of the things I love best about summer!

In June, I actually scheduled time to "meet" with an online book group to discuss a book we were all reading. I was so excited to have this learning time set aside—and then life got in the way. My daughter wrecked her car, our flights for vacation were delayed, a contractor we'd scheduled for some home repair work was available a month earlier than we'd planned, and I had a bout of pink eye (in the summer—who gets pink eye in the summer??). All of these events prevented me from participating in my book study for two weeks in a row. Life was giving me lemons, for sure!

Just how did I turn these lemons into lemonade? By adjusting my attitude a bit to see the many unplanned episodes of waiting as chances to read, listen, and to learn!

Whether you read a professional book at the pool, listen to podcasts in the car while running errands, or catch up on your favorite blogs while waiting for a flight—there are lots of opportunities to use small snippets of time to expand your knowledge on a topic near and dear to your heart.

Author Donalyn Miller calls it edge time reading in her book Reading in the Wild, where readers learn to use even the smallest of spurts of time to get in a few pages with their current book of choice.

I think we can apply this same principle to LEARNING. Here are a few ways I used small chunks of time found "around the edges" of bigger commitments to squeeze in a little summer learning just in the last week alone:

read a blogpost while waiting for the spin cycle on washer to end

read another blogpost while on hold with car insurance company

caught up on new blogposts while waiting for a prescription

read PD book reviews while waiting for paint to be mixed at hardware store

listened to podcasts while painting a room

read a professional book while traveling to airport an hour away

listened to podcasts while waiting for flight

read blogpost while waiting for Uber ride

followed up on Instagram post book referral while in hospital waiting room

Most of these examples involved waiting or trying to finish a project. Instead of seeing these as frustrations keeping me from moving on to the next thing, I chose to see them as OPPORTUNITIES to learn - the old LEMONS vs LEMONADE debate. I took these opportunities to squeeze in a little learning!

Here are some of what I've been reading and listening to this summer:

Relentless by Hamish Brewer

The Reading Strategies Book: Your Everything Guide to Developing Skilled Readers by Jennifer Seravallo

The Creativity Project edited by Colby Sharp

Our Story Begins edited by Elissa Brent Weissman

Cult of Pedagogy podcast

Not So Wimpy Teacher podcast

House of #EdTech podcast

Mind/Shift podcast

Edverything podcast

What are some of your favorite ways to squeeeeeeeeeze in a little learning (or reading) in the summer?
Your students can write about a lucky day, unusual or different lucky charms, and the March weather in your area - print the lamb and lion today and you have an easy writing prompt for this week. Use the shamrocks now or in the coming weeks to make a cute bulletin board for St. Patrick's Day.

Different teachers use our monthly writing papers in different ways:

for a morning quick write,

or plan a lesson specifically around the themes for that month

use for early-finishers

use as a writing station during literacy centers

differentiate by customizing your writing task specifically for your learners' needs

You can find writing papers for each month in our Teacher Pay Teachers store under the monthly custom categories.

If you download these and use them, be sure to tag us if you post a picture on social media! We'd love for you to win a TpT gift card!
Welcome - we're glad you are here! We've made a couple of freebies for you to help lessen the work involved when students are out sick.

Have your students missed a LATTE of school due to colds, strep, and flu? Has your family been able to stay healthy? We have been hit so hard by the seasonal flu and strep going around! We've had about 75% of our students out at some point during January and February—and not just for a day or two! Most have missed four or more days, so we hope to celebrate having perfect attendance once again soon, let me tell you!

Does this sound like your class? Want to know a little secret? There's something we hate more than strep, the flu, or colds. Are you ready?

Make. Up. Work. Uggh!!

It's a pain to get it pulled together, and it's a royal pain to go through it all when it comes back. Here is a little trick that lessens the pain a bit: color code the pages so parents know what is a higher priority to complete. You could code them using a highlighter in this manner:

yellow - must do, high priority (mustard, get it?)

red/pink - catch up when you can, not high priority (ketchup or catsup, get it?)

Another option is to color code the work according to what goes where when it is returned; just code the assignments by drawing a line with a highlighter at the top of the page:

blue for any work that needs to be handed back to another teacher (for example, a small group teacher or math teacher, if you switch classes)

green for go (check quickly and send home)

pink for stop (take time to grade)

yellow for wait (if it's part of a bigger project and needs to be put away in a special place)

© Jessica Sawyer Designs

As much as we hate it, make up work is as much a part of this cold and flu season as Clorox Wipes, Kleenex, and hand sanitizer.

DONUT worry, we're here to help! Today we're also sharing a simple page to help record assignments for absent students, and it's FREE. You could even use the color coding strategies above on the boxes on this page. And you might have guessed, we've used a donut and latte theme to make it at least a little fun for those poor sick students. (Here's another tip—train your students to help with getting work out for missing classmates when they pull out their own materials. They can even fill in the work on the recording sheet if you'd like them to.)
Some schools don't send home make up work, and if that's your situation, use this resource to keep a record of what students have missed and need to work on when they return.
We've created a few fun and festive PERFECT ATTENDANCE posters for you to use on your door or in your classroom to celebrate when everyone is present. We've included several spring-y options as well as black/white options for those with limited color printing capability.

It All Started with Flubberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06173067012772946819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8113388829528268931.post-59772371249195100302018-11-25T22:27:00.000-05:002018-11-25T22:27:50.152-05:00How to Use Wonderings to Drive Student LearningIn this post, we looked at having a place for students to record their wonderings and questions—whether it is in students' individual journals or in a public place, such as in a curiosity corner or on a wonder wall in your classroom. Recording our wonderings has the dual purpose of giving voice to our kids' curiosity—AND giving us a place to "park" our wonders so we can come back to these musings to delve in more fully when time permits.

As promised, this is Part 2 of What to Do with Wonders - and we've created a print-and-go resource to allow your students a place to record their wonderings. Our intent is to help you see how we use this in our classrooms AND give you some ideas to make the next steps easy-peasie!

We let our kids jot down their questions and post them on our Wonder Wall in our classroom. Okay, it's really just a locker door that was bare anyway and needed something on it, so it's a perfect place to park our questions until we have research time or project time to explore them more fully. You can allow each student a specific place for wonders, or segment the space by subject area, or just allow random postings. Students love that all posts are public, so anyone can select a "wonder" that strikes his or her fancy.

So your students are recording and sharing their wonders—now what? Where do we steer kids to find out more?

Google - of course - or try these kid-oriented search engines:

Our kids love Kiddle.

Safe Search Kids is another one - and includes safe searches for images!

KidRex - is another option for a child-safe search engine that is very kid-friendly.

Some sites are geared specifically toward curating interesting topics or answering kids questions firsthand. Here are just three of our favorites:

Wonderopolis - If you don't know about Wonderopolis, you will want to check it out! It's a great site to use with students—a place where curiosity and imagination lead to discovery and learning.

Hey, teachers: in addition to the daily Wonders, there is also the Wonder Ground, a place for teachers to go for lesson ideas.

For those who work run summer camps or work with summer school or homeschool kids, Camp Wonderopolis is an online "camp" filled with STEM and Maker opportunities for camps, summer programs, and families.

The Kid Should See This - Dubbed as "Smart videos for curious minds of all ages," some of the many topics include animals, DIY, nature, animation, food, science, technology, music, and art. These are billed as not-for-kids-but-perfect-for-kids, and are curated by Rion Nakaya and her 7- and 10-year old kids!

Mystery Doug - This site is hands-down our kids' favorite. Kids can post questions and may be featured on a future episode. Loads of learning happens here, I can attest to that!

Did you know there are also many kid-friendly podcasts? These interesting forays into science, technology, history and more can spark many questions. Here are just two:

Dream Big Podcast - Wow, a podcast by a kid for kids, that also has guest hosts who are specialists in many different areas - this is one to check out with your kids, for sure!

Tumble Science for Kids - This is really for your entire family, trust us! Not sure a podcast is for your child (or for you)? Check out the episodes on the science of poop, or cracking the code of firefly lights—they will light a fire in your students or kids!

{As a side-note, some state tests now have a section that tests listening comprehension. These podcasts give us a way to practice just that skill. As teachers, we can listen first and make a short comprehension assessment to see how well our kids listened and understood what they heard.}

Please share these sites with your students, families, and colleagues for high engagement learning that will have students falling deeper into the "rabbit hole" as their questions lead to more questions, and answers lead to more wonderings!

If you need some resources to set up a Wonder Wall, please check out our store for our 50-page Wonder Wall resource! And be sure to let us know about any fun sites we neglected to mention for student inquiry!

We've all had those exciting teachable moments that make our heart flutter a bit. You know, those moments when the intrigue of a particular topic takes over the classroom. When that topic matches the one in your lesson plans—wow, it's powerful—creating a perfect storm scenario for learning! Those are the moments that can be among the most memorable of the year!

But what about those dreaded times when the topic of interest doesn't match the one written in your lesson plans? What do you do when one lesson spawns additional inquiry and questioning, but the actual assessment coming up is over the primary lesson and concepts? Do you take the track to the side, or do you keep on the track at hand?

Sometimes it would be so easy to push aside the plans you've made and the curriculum goals at hand. That lesson can surely take a back seat to the related (or not) topic now pushing its way to the forefront of your classroom....all in the name of student-driven learning, right?

Can you allow student questioning to have a VOICE (and a strong one) without sacrificing your lesson? Yes, it's possible; first and foremost, see if tying the two together will work for you. If so, run with it! Be sure to communicate to students the need to tie the two topics together. For example, once my students became enthralled with the idea of hurricanes vs typhoons vs tornadoes vs cyclones vs monsoons. It was a reading class and we were working on text and graphic features, so it was easy allow the class to veer off on a different path. The students could easily find and cite examples of graphic features in other sources outside of the ones I had available. My students were off on a tangent, but by giving VOICE to their questions, I gave them a CHOICE in their learning. Soon they were exploring questions they didn't even know they had!

However, there are those times when you cannot allow time for learning objectives to change course. Fear not, all is not lost—you can still give VOICE to their wonderings, you just need a place for students to record them. This can easily be done in private using student journals; or curious questions can be posted publicly in your classroom on a chalk/whiteboard, on sticky notes, on a simple We're Wondering form, or on another form you may have. Creating a routine where students know what to do or where to post wonderings is a powerful way to set the stage for future learning.

We've linked a little FREEBIE to help with this. Simply keep a few of these WE ARE WONDERING forms on hand and jot down the student or class, the question, and post this form in a place set aside for wonderings on the wall in your classroom—it can be easy to set up a Curiosity Corner or Wonder Wall.

With this routine in place, students can later come back to these musings to dive in more fully when time permits. You will be amazed that the students actually want to come back to these questions when they are given time, and you'll be equally amazed to see what new "rabbit holes" these questions open up. In many classrooms, these wonderings can be the start of a passion project, inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, or even a genius hour project.

Be sure to check back next week for Student Wonderings, Part 2, and we'll explore the value of allowing time for learning that isn't driven by standards or curriculum maps, but learning that is driven by student interest. We'll also share some phenomenal resources to give students both CHOICE and a VOICE in their own learning.

Thanks for reading—be sure to share your thoughts or ideas for capitalizing on student-inquiry in the comments below!
Post pictures on our blog or any social media platform to show us how you used these in your classroom!

Here are some easy classroom set up ideas and self-preservation tips to help:

keep a list and check off what gets done

start with a task that has you really excited, or one that gives you the biggest bang for your buck (time) - arranging desks is the one for me!

tackle a task that's a bit daunting, then flip back to an easy one as you build momentum for completing your checklist

don't stress if nothing gets checked off once in awhile - you are on summer break, you know!

let your students do some of the classroom set up and decorating so they have ownership in it

harness the help of former students if possible, they'll love helping with classroom set up

take some time for yourself each day - read, watch a funny TV show, or just do what makes you happy

labels, labels, labels - we print SO MANY classroom things on labels, from workbook or folder labels for each student to a strip of student names in fun fonts for each child, use those labels!

take pictures as you go so you can see tangible evidence of progress, but remember that sometimes you have to make a mess to clean up a mess - case in point, my art supply cabinet

try having students get supplies from stations on the first day or two - this way they aren't overwhelmed with a huge stack of things on their desks from the first moment they walk in, and it saves you loads of time

don't strive for perfect - do your best and let it go

We hope you have MANY more days before you have to think about BTS, but if you are like us and already have begun to think about getting organized, take it small in little bites and it's not nearly such a monstrous task!

Dozens of Ways to Use Plastic Easter Eggs in Your ClassroomEaster is almost here, and that means a plethora of plastic Easter eggs might just need a good home after the treats inside have been consumed...namely, after about 52.3 seconds at our house!

Or maybe you are like us and cannot pass up the bargain bins at the store where they'll have colorful plastic eggs for ridiculously low prices.

Have no fear—there are literally endless ways to use these in the classroom, regardless of the grade you teach! Most of these can be written directly on the outside of the egg, or you can use slips of paper inside the eggs if desired. Use any of these ideas for an egg hunt or a literacy or math center or station!
It All Started with Flubberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06173067012772946819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8113388829528268931.post-74823545453276524522018-03-16T23:35:00.005-04:002018-03-28T09:59:46.229-04:00March MadnessWe're not sure what it's like where you are, or when your spring break is, but if you were in the classroom this past week, chances are some of your students showed signs of March Madness!

No, we don't mean all of the fun college hoops happening now—this is more like the squirrelly behavior of students who have only had a handful of outdoor recesses this month! We're talking about impulsive behavior that would have officials calling a foul. These are behaviors that have us teachers checking the calendar to make sure it's NOT a full moon.

Why is this happening?? Is this caused by the time change? Is it because we had our second round of state testing in three weeks? Is it due to predictably unpredictable March weather (snow for many, storms for others, rain for many) that has us wearing short sleeves one day, rain gear the next, and snow gear the next?

How can we get back on track? How do you deal with behavior issues when all you really want to do is teach? You've worked hard to plan and prepare for engaging lessons, and you know the value of each minute of class time. Here are three ideas for getting your class back on track.

It's easy to get frustrated; however, we have to remember that sometimes taking class time to talk it out is valuable, too. This isn't learning as it pertains to your standards and curriculum, but it's definitely life-lesson-learning.

When you call a class meeting, keep these things in mind:

keep your discussion focused on positive ways to improve behavior

this is not the time for rehashing old behavior issues, finger-pointing, calling out specific kids or behaviors, or getting into he said/she said debates

steer the conversation to what students CAN do as opposed to what they shouldn't do

guide students to help brainstorm and list specific tools for curbing their impulsivity

keep this list visible and refer to it when students DO make strong choices—accentuate the positive behaviors as often as you can

role-play scenarios to give students practice disengaging from distractions

give that "distracting voice" in their brains a name, and practice reminding it that it's not in charge

Another strategy to combat March Madness is to build in frequent brain breaks.

GoNoodle is a great site to get them up, singing, and moving. In our classroom, much hilarity ensues when their teacher joins in with her own (cue embarrassed blushing emoji) dance moves.

Our friend Rachel Lynette has some super ideas to get kids up and moving over on Minds in Bloom! We like Trading Places and Keep It Up.

Bevin over on Teach. Train. Love has quite a fun list, too! Our favorites are the Sid Shuffle, Dancing Pandas, and Cha Cha Slide.

Honestly, there has NEVER been a time when we've taken a brain or movement break and thought, "Gee, that was a waste of time. I sure wish we had done _______ (insert learning activity) instead."

NEVER.

Every single time we've been bombarded with thoughts more along this line: "Wow, why don't we do this more often!?"

Finally, consider building in a practice of mindfulness to help kids build the stamina to pay attention while also developing their ability to regulate their emotions and impulses. Sounds like a WIN-WIN, doesn't it!? And you can do this in as little as 2-3 minutes a day. Here are three places to start:

We've found it very effective to use a Behavior Reflection Form for the student to write what action they took that wasn't making a strong choice. We also have them write why they made that choice (frustration, confusion over what to do, trying to be silly, etc.), and they write what they should do in the future in that situation. Grab your free form if this is something you think would be useful for your classroom.
We hope this gives you some ideas for dealing with March Madness and Spring Fever in your classroom! We'd love to hear some ways you handle periods of squirrelly behavior, too. Please feel free to comment below!
🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈

The big game is coming this weekend! Are you a football fan? Even if you're not, the Super Bowl has been getting lots of attention in the media, so your students are likely caught up in the football frenzy! And, if you're like us, anything that captures our students' attention means we are searching for opportunities to channel that interest into learning.

There are many ways to tie football and the Super Bowl into your curriculum—and in any subject area you teach.

🏈 Social Studies - mapping

Here are just a few fun mapping ideas for your class:

map the location of the teams

use scale of miles to determine the distance between Philadelphia and Boston

use scale of miles to find out how far each team will travel to the game in Minneapolis

The Super Bowl has a host of math connections!

measurement - just how far is 100 yards?

more measuring - how far can you kick (or throw) a ball?

cost to attend - how much would it cost for tickets, travel, hotel

elapsed time - how long would you travel to get to Minneapolis?

statistics - compare stats of the two teams of two players

graphing - research which teams have won multiple Super Bowls, or graph player stats; graph results (try this online graphing site: NCES Kid Zone: Create a Graph

place value - use yardage, scores, or the cost to run an ad during the Super Bowl; break these numbers down by place value

It All Started with Flubberhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06173067012772946819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8113388829528268931.post-49225032210006427132018-01-18T20:34:00.001-05:002018-03-28T10:01:12.421-04:00Monkeying Around

We have been SNOWED in and no school for 5 days! Yes, this mom is going to lose her mind! Snow days are great, at first! I love the sled riding, snow gear, smiles, laughs, and cool air. However, on day 5, I don't want to see any more wet clothes, make any more hot chocolate, or wipe up any more wet snow from the floors.

So, today, this mom changed things up. We did a service community project! We colored these cute tags that said, "My parents said we are driving them BANANAS being inside, so we are now MONKEYING around visiting you!" We then bought bananas and visited an assisted living unit to deliver them. The kids loved it, but not as much as the residents!

You should have seen the residents' faces! They lit up! The residents wanted to talk about the weather, tell stories about their lunch, or just give the kids a hug.

The magic moment happened in the car when we were leaving. My oldest son said, "Mom, that was great. We should really do a service community project every month!" Yes, yes, yes! This is what it is all about!

Today was a great SNOW day! I don't know who got more out of it, the residents or my children. Either way, it was a win-win situation!
